Conservation Works at Lanyon Homestead

The Lanyon Heritage Precinct (including outbuildings, gardens and cafe) remains OPEN while the Homestead is temporarily closed for conservation works.

We apologise for this disruption, though look forward to welcoming you to the site during this exciting renewal phase.

Free guided tours of the Heritage Precinct will be offered on the hour during this time. Meet your tour guide in the courtyard.

Lanyon Homestead is currently undergoing important conservation work to ensure it can be preserved and enjoyed for many years to come.

The site remains open, but scaffolding has been erected around the Homestead and a flurry of work is underway. To facilitate the works and to care for the collection, the Homestead will be closed and most objects and furniture will be put into storage.

The conservation works involve replacing aged roofing and gutters to ensure the Homestead is watertight and protected for the next 150 years and beyond against a changing climate. While this is not the original Homestead roof (the original timber shingles are still extant underneath), there have been many attempts to repair it and significant leaks and damage to the iron has meant the current roof has become unserviceable.

In close consultation with a heritage architect, materials conservator and roofing professionals the new roof and gutters will match the original as closely as possible, right down to the 19mm gauge of the corrugated iron.

Other works in this program include restoring water damaged ceilings, timber repairs and minor replacement, masonry repairs, repairs to the concrete steps and rectifying minor damage to ageing tiles. The Homestead will also be painted inside and out to its original colour scheme.

This program of conservation works has been carefully developed to maintain the heritage values of Lanyon Homestead and is funded by the ACT Government.

We look forward to welcoming you to our site throughout this important phase and thank you for your patience as the works cause minor disruptions to our usual operations.
