Lanyon Heritage Centre: Caring for collections

Sun 15 October: 11am–12pm

Free, bookings by Thu 12 October

Did you know that museums typically exhibit less than 10% of their collections at any one time, with the balance of collection objects stored safely off-site sometimes in multiple locations? By contrast, around 80% of the contents and fabric of a historic house are in constant use and on permanent display at a single site. Although the same basic principles of collection preservation underpin both, the interior of a historic building is at greater risk of damage and deterioration. If disaster threatens, the whole collection could be lost.

Join Barbara Reeve (formerly Head, Collection Services, Australian War Memorial) and Jennifer Elton (Collections Manager, ACT Historic Places) as they share the intricacies, challenges and creative solutions involved in caring for heritage collections in both national museums and house museums.

This program is part of the Spring Walk and Talk Series
